Department of FIRST YEAR DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING
Thiru. P. Nachimuthu Gounder, a great visionary was an embodiment of hard work, sincerity, truthfulness and perseverance. He aspired to impart technical education and training to the rural youth of Pollachi region, taking a cue from the PSG trust at Coimbatore. After his untimely demise, his illustrious son Arutchelvar Dr.N.Mahalingam, made his father's dream come true by establishing Nachimuthu Polytechnic College (NPTC) in the year 1957 under the Trust Nachimuthu Industrial Association (NIA).
The institute started with an intake of 120 students in Mechanical, Civil and Electrical Engineering departments, offering diploma education, has become one of the foremost aided autonomous polytechnics in Tamil Nadu offering quality technical education. NPTC is the first polytechnic college in the country to receive the Gold category accreditation by Asia Pacific Accreditation Certification Commission (APACC). Another jewel in the crown of NIA campus is the unique Collaborative Education Programme both at Diploma and Degree level with TVS Motors Company, since 2008.
The campus that celebrated its Diamond jubilee in the year 2017 has been the birthplace of several institutions viz:
Sakthi Polytechnic College established in this campus in the year 1981 was later shifted to its permanent campus in Nachimuthupuram, Sakthi Nagar, Bhavani, near Erode.
In commemoration of the silver jubilee year in 1983, Kumaraguru College of Technology was started in the year 1984 and later shifted to Saravanampatti, Coimbatore.
Arutchelvar, a Gandhian, strongly believed in Gandhiji's philosophy that promoted vocational education in schools, established Palani Gounder Higher Secondary School in 1995, a standalone higher secondary vocational school.
In the year 1998, commemorating the 75th birth year of Arutchelvar and 4 decades of rendering technical education through NPTC, Dr. Mahalingam College of Engineering and Technology (MCET) was established. In commemoration of the golden jubilee in the year 2007, the campus witnessed the establishment of Vanavarayar Institute of Agriculture. The college is situated 20 km away from Pollachi in a sprawling 250 acres of land.
This campus also has three technical conglomerates, ABT info.net, Caresoft Global and ABT Maruti that support the students to have industry exposure and training. NIA also has 15 centres of excellence established in collaboration with various industries.
The campus has also conducted two international conferences on Renewable Energy and Sustainable Environment in 2015 and 2017. As a culmination of which the campus has been proclaimed as green campus by stopping the use of plastic water bottles, launching urban forestry, powering street luminaires with solar power generation, supplying hot water to hostels through bio-gas plants, etc.
At present, NIA Educational Institutions consisting of 3 Higher Education Institutions, 3 Higher Secondary Schools, 3 Nursery and Primary Schools, spread across 4 campuses in Pollachi comprising of 12000 students and 1000 staff. It serves the society with best education imparting values, principles and discipline to groom the youth of the community to realise their dreams. The journey strengthens each day with the inspirations of Arutchelvar Ayya and the blessings of Arutperum Jyothi.
FIRST YEAR DEPARTMENT
Nachimuthu Polytechnic College, Pollachi, one of the pioneers imparting high quality technical education to the masses of the downtrodden people sincerely maintains the high standards set more than sixty years ago.
The first year department has been integral to the development of engineers as it moulds the fresh students to become engineers of merit. Highly qualified and experienced teachers with involvement and commitment have been the highlight of the department.
The curriculum of first year subjects are revised every three years to keep the students updated to the current developments in the respective fields. In the same way science laboratories are improved and maintained impeccably to facilitate the students gain first hand knowledge of the concepts’ learnt.
With an aim to make the students to demonstrate the learnings, Outcome Based Education (OBE) is implemented in the first year itself. This methodology specifies what is to be taught, how should the concepts be taught and how it is evaluated to verify the attainment of CO apart from guiding the students to learn the lessons as they should be learnt. This methodology is flexible as any method of instruction could be employed to make learning more effective. It has very clear scope for understanding the progress of the students by analyzing their entry level performance with the progress made in every subsequent month till the exit level. It encourages the students/learners to learn the concepts with the involvement and commitment so that they could be successful in the society after the completion of the course.
In addition, the first year department organizes programmes such as mini projects, workshops, moral and ethical values are given to the students in the first year itself. With the courses Communicative English, Engineering Mathematics, Engineering Physics, Engineering Chemistry, Engineering Drawing, Basics of computer science and Workshop practice, the first year department comprehensively prepares the fresh students to take up the core engineering subjects in the second year with ease and confidence.
English is a global language with rich and fascinating history. It plays key role in the first year of all Diploma branches. It focuses on professional as well as informal communication which mould the students to develop their Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (LSRW) and broaden their job opportunities.
Mathematics helps in analytical thinking and better reasoning abilities. It is building block of everything in our daily life and it plays a vital role in the application of engineering in various fields.
Physics contributes to better understanding of natural phenomena and developing technological infrastructure to ease the burden of physical labour. It provides personnel with expertise to solve the complexities with discoveries and inventions. Knowledge of physics is vital for chemists, Engineers and computer scientists as well as practitioners of other physical and biomedical sciences. In order to evolve innovative spirit and imbibe technical knowledge among the learners , miniproject exhibition were conducted.
Chemistry plays an important role in enhancing the research and development as well as ensures the students are equipped with good knowledge to produce services to improve quality of life. The importance of Chemistry cannot be diminished over time, and it will remain a promising career option.
Engineering Drawing is an engineering science course which aims at providing basic understanding of the fundamentals of engineering drawing mainly visualization, graphics theory, standard and conventions of drawing, the tools of drawing and the use of drawings in Engineering applications. Engineering Drawing is said to be the “Language of Engineers” because it is the graphic way for communicating engineers’ ideas, designs and thoughts to others.
Workshop Practice is an engineering science laboratory in which the students undergo hands on training on basic machining processes like Filing, Cutting, Drilling, Boring etc., Basic electrical circuits such as parallel, Series Connection and trouble shooting of domestic wiring are also taught. In general students become acclimatized with machine tools and their applications.
Basics of Computer Science
Computer science is one of the disciplines of modern science under which, various aspects of computer technology, their development, and applications in the present world are studied. Likewise, Computer Science includes a wide range of topics such as the development of Computer Technology ( hardware and software), application of Computer technology in today’s life, information technology, computer threat, computer security, etc…
It is obvious that today computer is playing a very important role in our lives. One cannot imagine the world without computers and this technology is advancing both in industry and at home. It has become necessary for everyone to have the basic knowledge of computer, as it has pervaded all walks of life.
Acquire adequate knowledge and skills in the basic Engineering courses to apply them in their respective Engineering programmes of study.
Impart fundamental technical knowledge, communicative skills, Leadership quality, Ethical and Moral values among students to develop their overall personality and social consciousness.
